Cost Management Support for Azure Red Hat OpenShift (ARO)

Context: Cloudability currently provides dedicated cost visibility and allocation capabilities for Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS (ROSA). This includes workload-level attribution across clusters, namespaces, deployments, and labels, enabling customers to operate advanced FinOps practices on containerized environments running on AWS.

Need: Many Cloudability customers are operating production workloads on Azure Red Hat OpenShift (ARO), the fully managed OpenShift service on Microsoft Azure. Today, due to the lack of native support for ARO, the costs surfaced in Cloudability are primarily limited to Azure infrastructure (Compute, Networking, Storage), which prevents:

  • Accurate cost allocation by business unit, application, squad, or service.
  • Tracking for Unit Enconomics or KPIs such as Cost per Container / Cost per Transaction.
  • Clear optimization opportunities for Kubernetes resources running on ARO. (Rightsizing)
  • Reliable showback/chargeback to workload owners within the cluster.

Request
We request to enable native support for Azure Red Hat OpenShift (ARO) in Cloudability, aligned with the current capabilities available for ROSA, including:

  • Cost and usage ingestion and allocation across Kubernetes object hierarchy (cluster → namespace → workload → pod → container).
  • Integration with the Metrics Agent for Azure Kubernetes/OpenShift or an equivalent telemetry ingestion method.
  • Support for Azure Resource Tags and workload labels associated with ARO resources.
  • Dedicated dashboards and visualizations for ARO within Container Cost Allocation.
  • Optimization recommendations specific to OpenShift clusters running in Azure.

Expected Benefits

  • Strengthens Cloudability’s value proposition for hybrid and multicloud OpenShift environments.
  • Expands FinOps maturity for customers with significant Azure presence.
  • Improves precision in cost attribution and operational accountability for containers. We have this with KC, but customers don't want to add two solutions just for ARO.
