Configuration of Access and Error Logs Retention and Size Policies for Nginx in Instana

Currently, the access and error logs generated by Nginx in Instana are stored under /var/log/instana/nginx and can occupy significant disk space. However, there is no way to configure retention and size policies for these logs, which can lead to storage issues and impact system performance.

We request Instana to add a feature that enables users to set retention and size policies for the access and error logs generated by Nginx. This feature would allow users to control the storage space consumed by logs, ensuring that disk space is utilized efficiently and minimizing the impact on system performance.

With this feature, users could specify the retention period and maximum size of the logs, after which the logs would be automatically deleted or rotated. This would give users the flexibility to balance log retention requirements with storage constraints, optimizing the use of system resources.

We believe that this enhancement would greatly benefit users of Instana and improve the overall usability and performance of the platform. We urge the Product Management team to consider this feature request and implement it in future releases.

    Hi Kursat,

I understand that traffic logging for EUM creates significantly larger log files than for Instana instances without EUM. We will consider providing a fixed log rotation in future releases and will update you here.

    Hi,

Yes, we have enabled EUM. The client anticipates being able to configure log rotation policies directly within the tool. Following some brief conversations with the client, they did not indicate any interest in utilizing a third-party log rotation tool.

    Hi Kursat,

I see that is quite significant. Did you have EUM enabled by chance? When you configure log rotation for other tools, how does that usually work?

    Hubert

    Hi Hubert,

Thank you for your response. Our log files were 3GB+

Using 3rd party log rotation is not doable but keeping logs for a specific amount of days would be sufficient for my case.

    Kind Regards,

    Kursat.

    Hi Kursat,

how large are your nginx logs that they are concern?

With this feature, users could specify the retention period and maximum size of the logs, after which the logs would be automatically deleted or rotated. This would give users the flexibility to balance log retention requirements with storage constraints, optimizing the use of system resources.

If you need this flexibility, I encourage you to employ a tool like logrotate and configure it to your needs. You can find an example here https://stackoverflow.com/a/54033407
We can look into employing a standard logrotation rule, e.g. keep the last 10 days. But making it configurable is a no.
We can also look into provide examples using logration on the docker host and document these blueprints once you confirm this would suffice.

    Best,
    Hubert
