This is an IBM Automation portal for Cloud Management and AIOps products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Manage configuration.yaml with Secret

We would like to monitor EDB Postgres for Kubernetes on Instana.

As a prerequisite, Instana runs only agents in SaaS deployment format in an OpenShift environment.

EDB Postgres for Kubernetes runs in the same OpenShift environment.

Referring to the following page, we were able to monitor EDB from Instana.

https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/instana-observability/current?topic=cha-configuring-host-agents-by-using-agent-configuration-file#hashicorp-vault

However, there are security concerns about recording DB user password information in ConfigMap.

<Definition>

# oc get cm instana-agent -n instana-agent -o yaml

apiVersion: v1

data:

cluster_name: dev-mcp-001

configuration-disable-kubernetes-sensor.yaml: |

com.instana.plugin.kubernetes:

enabled: false

configuration.yaml: |2

# Manual a-priori configuration. Configuration will be only used when the sensor

…snip…

com.instana.plugin.postgresql:

user: 'edbuser'

password: 'edbpassword'

database: 'edbuser' # by default PostgreSQL will use 'user' as database to connect to.

…snip…

The contents of configuration.yaml include confidential information depending on the settings.

Could you please improve it so that it can be defined in Secret instead of ConfigMap?

Thank you very much.

    Dear Customer,

Pulling password from Kubernetes secrets in Agent configuration can already be achieved by combining two existing features:

    • Mount the password from a Secret to an environment variable or file into the application pod

      • it is critical to mount the secret inside the application pod, in your example the postgresql pod will have the file or env var mounted!

      • mount to file is described here

      • mount to environment variable is described here

    • Reference the file or env var mounted from the Agent's configuration.yaml as described here

      • Instana Agent will look up the referenced file or env var inside the application pod and fill in the configuration value for the sensor

    Thank you & best regards
