Extending Instana JAVA-Sensor to collect additional metrics from IBM ELM JVM's

IBM Engineering lifecycle management platform (ELM or also known as Jazz platform) is a widely used Requirements management or Application lifecycle management platform in the industry. It is based on IBM Websphere application Server and the liberty profile. The IBM ELM development team gives recommendation for monitoring on specific health metrics which are advertised by the platform via Mbeans.

With the capability of Instana to add custom JMX Metrics to the list of metrics collected from a JVM it is possible to add these metrics manually.

This enhancement request is to extend the JAVA sensor of Instana to collect the recommended ELM Mbeans automatically.

Necessary enhancements:

  1. Extend the Instana agent technology detection to detect IBM ELM workloads.
  2. Extend the Instana JAVA Sensor to automatically detect all enabled ELM specific Mbeans for the ELM component running on a host
  3. Add IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management as a supported technology and display the specific Mbeans metrics on special Dashboard, according to the Monitoring guide for ELM.
