Add COBOL tracing on distributed environments

The idea is to Add COBOL tracing on distributed(Linux/Windows) environments.

Background:

There are still many customers running critical COBOL applications, and monitoring these applications are vital.

Currently, there are no Otel SDK/APIs for COBOL, and there is no way to trace COBOL applications using Instana.

    Hi @Guest

To proceed further, we need the below information:

    • What type of application, database, and runtime environment is the customer using?

    • Are they currently using any tracing tools? In the Aha! idea comments, @Jacky Xu mentioned ProbeVue and Trace tools - are these being used by the customer now?

    • The Aha! comments also referred to "collecting information about COBOL and scripts." Could you please clarify what specific scripts or details are expected here?

    Thank you in advance!

Our customers are expecting to be able to collect information about COBOL and Script. If this support is provided, they will be able to expand the scope of Instana license purchases next year.
We hope that you will provide support soon in order to expand our business.

My customer finally decided to purchase Instana SaaS after a lot of internal discussion and effort.
However, they have a strong requirement to monitor COBOL applications running on AIX.Whether they continue using Instana depends heavily on this capability.
Please prioritize support for COBOL tracing on AIX, and kindly share any roadmap or future plans for this feature.

As per the discussion had with @Guest
The customer is seeking a solution for automatic tracing of COBOL programs. Modifying the existing COBOL applications is not a feasible option. These COBOL programs are currently running on Windows, Linux, and AIX platforms. Support for these environments would be highly valuable.

    Hi @Guest ,

Could you please clarify the customer's expectations? Specifically, are they looking for SDK-based support or automatic tracing for COBOL?

Also, could you let us know which environment(s) we should focus on for Phase 1?

    Hello,

Thank you for your the request. We are looking in the direction of eBPF Tracing/Profiling in 2025, which would cover the Linux environment for COBOL. I will keep you updated
