Monitoring python applications running on Windows hosts in Instana

Hi Instana Team,

As a user who relies on Python applications running in a Windows environment, I wanted to highlight the current limitations with the instana.collector.helpers.runtime module due to its dependency on the Unix-specific resource library. Since Windows hosts are not currently supported for full Python tracing, this creates a significant challenge for those of us monitoring Python applications on Windows platforms.

I would like to propose the following ideas to enhance the Python monitoring experience for Windows users:

Support for Windows: Could there be a future release of the Instana Python sensor with a more platform-agnostic approach? This would greatly expand its usability across environments.

Alternative to resource Module: Is it possible to replace or abstract the resource module so that Windows systems can also benefit from the tracing features?

As Python usage is prevalent across different platforms, including Windows, I believe extending support would be a valuable enhancement to Instana's versatility and reach. I’m sure many in the community would appreciate this added flexibility for their monitoring solutions.

Looking forward to your thoughts on this and any potential plans for future releases.

Best regards,
