Instana Agent Installation on MQ: Configuration Challenges and Retry Mechanism Concerns

We encountered some issues during the Instana Agent installation on MQ. Below are the steps we followed and our observations

  • Initial Installation
    The Instana Agent was installed with the default configuration, running under the "system" account.
  • Configuration Update
    After experiencing initial issues, we added the required configuration like username and password to configuration.yaml as outlined here: IBM MQ Monitoring.
  • Issue Observed
    Despite the update, the Instana Agent continued attempting connections to MQ, causing the folder D:\IBM\WMQ\errors to fill with logs and eventually rendering the machine unusable.
  • Solution Implemented
    We resolved the issue by running the Instana Agent under a user with direct access to MQ.
  • Customer Query
    The customer expects the agent misbehavior to be fixed when executed with default privileges. If possible, they would like to disable the Instana Agent's retry mechanism to prevent similar issues with legacy systems in the future, if caused by missing access privileges with Windows user accounts.
