Javascript map files should not be downloaded repeatedly

The Website monitoring supports minified javascript through parsing of mapping files.

However these mapping files are not cached by Instana so they are downloaded repeatedly. For big applications this means millions of downloads of files which are >10 MB. This accounts for 50% of our CDN traffic at the moment.

Support suggested to use the map file upload feature, which we did until it broke.

The map file upload has a fixed quota of 500 MB. We have reached this quota in 3 Months.

The only option to clean up uploaded files is a "delete all" API call which is clearly not sufficient.

Without any improvment on this topic, we need to add the additional CDN load and costs into the calculation of our Instana contract which worsens the calculation and increases internal pressure to reduce costs.


Instana is expected to fix this either way:

  1. Improve caching, so files are only downloaded a few times and not constantly

OR

2. Fix the Map file upload to allow for more than 500 MB

OR

3. Provide a means to expire single uploaded map files instead of the current "delete all" api call.

    • Have you tried by creating a configuration per each website version and upload the symbol files to that particular configuration? - you will have 500MB limit to upload symbol files of a single configuration.
      - Configuration1 (website v1) ---- symbolFiles1, 2, 3 ----> total size=400MB
      - Configuration2 (website v2) ---- symbolFiles1, 2, 3 ----> total size=300MB

    • You can create till 1000 configurations

    • This option also allows you to delete configurations related to older versions of the website (not in use anymore)
