Need to fix Agent download process for air-gapped customers

This is related to support case TS018328082

The issue is with Standard Edition when working with air-gapped customers.   The behavior was different with the Docker backend.  But, with standard edition, here is what happens.

The customers have access to the Agent repos from their labtops.  But, the Instana Backend is air-gapped and can't reach the repos.  When you click on the Agent Download button in the UI it fails because the Instana Server attempts to reach the repos directly.

We need to develop a process where air-gapped customers can get Agent images in a fairly automated process.   I think there are multiple options that could be pursued.  

  • We could have a modified approach to the automatic 1-liner where the customer added a configuration to the Instana Backend that specified their own internal repo.   Then, this 1-liner could be generated to work with their internal mirror rather than going out to the Internet.
    • One of the biggest problems with this approach is that we don't have a similar capability for UNIX and Windows
  • Provide a way that Instana server does not attempt to access when downloading the TAR and RPM files.   Customers still need a way to configure those packages.   Perhaps have a stanctl command that configures the image if the customer downloads the generic package.

    If the use of an internal repo worked, I would agree with you, but it doesn't :-) We provide customers with an automatic-one-liner. It won't work with an internal mirror because there is information hard coded in the install script.


    Potentialy, we can create something similar to the one liner that just does an RPM install. For example:


    export INSTANA_AGENT_HOST=<backend-host>;INSTANA_AGENT_PORT=443;INSTANA_AGENT_KEY=<agent-key>;INSTANA_AGENT_AUTOSTART=true;rpm --install instana-agent-static-j9-aix-20250625-1428.ppc.rpm

    As part of the review process, we strive to be transparent about our intentions with each enhancement suggestion. The offering team has carefully reviewed this idea and has decided that it does not fit into our current plans, so the request for enhancement record will be closed. The request will be kept in IBM's ideas repository and may still be voted on. It might be reassessed or reopened for additional feedback in the future. We value your feedback and thank you for allowing us the privilege of partnering with you in developing our products.


    The way to go with air-gapped is to set up a mirror of the Instana repositories and download agents and images form the mirrored copy.
