After speaking to Corey (mentioned above), there are indeed efforts underway to move to a new table component that offers more capabilities, customization and flexibility. Talks are underway with development but there is not definite timeline for when this would be updated in the product yet. This also would not be done at once, teams would need to integrate depending on their capacity.
