Instana support local monitoring For IBM DataPower Physical Appliance

Currently, Instana’s support for DataPower is limited to remote monitoring options for the DataPower Physical Appliance. However, our client is requesting local monitoring capabilities on the appliance itself.

Since DataPower operates as a black box, proactive monitoring is challenging. Without direct visibility, Instana can only track performance through inbound and outbound calls, which does not provide comprehensive insights into system health. To achieve a more holistic, end-to-end monitoring approach, they request local monitoring agent in Instana to observe application transactions within DataPower.

Additionally, remote monitoring does not support tracing for MQ (Message Queue) transactions, which is critical for the client’s operations. While DataPower offers tracing via OpenTelemetry (OTEL), its functionality is currently limited to API Gateway monitoring. However, our client relies on MQ in their application and the lack of tracing capabilities for MQ handling significantly impacts their ability to monitor performance and dependencies within their environment.

If this feature enhancement is implemented, our client would strongly consider adopting Instana for their monitoring needs.
