Allow Customization of Long-Term Trace Retention Policies in Instana On-Prem

We are currently running IBM Instana in an on-premises environment and have encountered limitations with trace retention configuration. According to the official documentation, only the short-term trace retention policy is configurable. However, our use case requires us to also modify the long-term trace retention policy.

Our goal is to reduce the storage footprint of long-term trace data, especially in high-throughput environments where storage can grow rapidly. Without the ability to adjust the long-term retention settings, we are forced to allocate excessive storage resources, which impacts infrastructure costs and management.

We would like to request the feature to:

  • Enable configuration of long-term trace retention periods in on-prem installations.

  • Allow granular control over what data is retained long-term (e.g., via service, tag, or span duration).

  • Optionally provide a way to purge old long-term data manually or through automation.

This feature would greatly improve Instana’s flexibility for self-hosted environments and allow teams to optimize resource usage based on their observability goals.
