Expand Instana Severity Levels to match with Netcool Omnibus and other AIOps Event Management.

Dear IBM Instana Product Team,

As a customer currently using IBM APM V8 alongside IBM Instana for application performance monitoring, we appreciate the robust capabilities and insights provided by Instana’s monitoring platform.

However, we have identified a critical gap in severity level granularity between IBM Instana and IBM Netcool Omnibus, which impacts effective event correlation and incident management during integration. IBM Instana’s current use of just two severity levels, CRITICAL and WARNING, limits our ability to precisely map and escalate alerts into IBM Netcool Omnibus, which employs a more granular six-level severity scale ranging from Clear (0) to Critical (5).

To better support enterprise incident management workflows and improve integration with IBM Netcool Omnibus and other IT service management platforms, we request an enhancement to IBM Instana that includes:

1.       Expansion of the severity level model beyond the current two-tier system to align with industry-standard severity levels such as Critical, Major, Minor, Warning, Informational, and Clear.

2.       Ability to configure/customize severity levels to fit organizational policies for alert prioritization.

3.       Documentation and tooling to assist in mapping these enhanced severity levels automatically during integration with IBM Netcool Omnibus.

This enhancement will bridge a key gap in our observability ecosystem, enabling more effective alert prioritization, reducing noise, and improving operational response times. We believe that this alignment will not only benefit our environment but also enhance Instana’s value proposition as part of IBM’s broader observability and AIOps portfolio. Many other IBM customers like us will also benefit from this.

We look forward to your consideration of this enhancement request and would appreciate any timelines or plans you can share.

Thank you for supporting our monitoring and incident management needs.
