Monitoring/compatibility issue: jvm_attach_generic - part of magic xpi monitoring

As per the customer- The host agent cannot attach correctly to this Java Virtual Machine. Therefore, this process will not be traced. Refer to the host agent logs for more information as to why the attachment failed. The host agent will try to connect again to this virtual machine every ten minutes. However, until it succeeds, neither traces nor metrics will be collected for this JVM.

As per the Instana support engineer- magic xpi is currently not supported by Instana.

I had a discussion with our extended(development) team and they believe that Instana might show some calls because we might be instrumenting underlying libs used by Magic XPI but we never tested and claim support for Magic XPI so we are not sure traces will shown correctly or not. Even through it is Java or .net app but we never instrument and tested Magic XPI so not sure how Instana will behave and out of the box support is not possible.

Feel free to open Aha item for this feature.

    As per Henning- 12 Nov-2025:

The Product team already stated that Magic XPI is not supported. Even basic JVM monitoring is not supported since we can't load our Java instrumentation.

Since SBM came back with a request to handle the case the same way as another one, by using the configuration-based Java SDK. Unfortunately this is not possible since we can't load our instrumentation code.

Another option for SBM is to instrument the application using the open source OpenTelemetry framework and OpenTelemetry Java SDK and send the data to Instana. This however is a setup where we can't consult or support.

    Hi Henning Treu

What we understood was tracing was not possible as the application uses proprietary Java classes, can you check & confirm the same.

    Thanks,

    Praveen

    Hi Kanan,

the bare JVM monitoring should work from what I could extract from the linked ticket. So bare JVM and java library tracing should work. Customer can open another support ticket for this with reference to this idea and my comment.

Magic xpi will not be on our mid-term priority list.

    Best regards
