Instana to monitor the JDBC connection percentage for the IBM WebSphere Application Server

Currently, Instana does not support monitoring the JDBC connection pool usage as a percentage of the total pool size for WebSphere Application Server. This feature is essential to detect and alert when JDBC connection utilization exceeds a defined threshold (e.g., 80%), which is crucial for maintaining application performance and preventing resource exhaustion.

We request the following enhancements:

1.       Inclusion of a metric that calculates the JDBC connection pool usage as a percentage of the maximum pool size, excluding summary rows from this calculation to ensure accurate monitoring.

2.       Smart Alert and Event support to generate alerts based on defined usage thresholds with configurable severity levels.

3.       Ability to exclude specific JDBC connection pools or data sources from monitoring to tailor alerting and reduce noise.

Given IBM WebSphere Application Server’s vital role in banking and enterprise environments, and IBM’s commitment to comprehensive middleware monitoring, this basic feature will greatly benefit many customers by enabling proactive database resource management and improving operational reliability.
