Monitor WebSphere Application Server Thread Usage Percentage with Alerting and Exclusion Support

To further enhance operational visibility, we request an enhancement to monitor thread usage in WAS as a percentage metric with alerting capabilities.

Specifically, we propose the following features:

Monitor the number of free threads in each WebSphere Application Server thread pool as a percentage of the maximum allowed threads for all thread pool names.

Configure Smart Alerts and events to trigger notifications when the free thread percentage falls below a user-defined threshold (e.g., 50%).

Exclude summary rows from the metric calculation to avoid generalized or skewed results, ensuring alerts are accurate and actionable for individual thread pools.

This enhancement is a basic but critical function that would directly support proactive performance management and incident prevention in environments relying on WAS. Given the importance of WAS in enterprise and banking sectors, and IBM’s commitment to monitoring middleware under its brand, we believe this feature would benefit many customers widely.
