Conditional or Correlated Alert Logic in Instana (e.g., “Alert on X unless Y is high”)

We would like to have the ability to define conditional or correlated alert logic in Instana. For example, we need to trigger an alert when there are too many 404 responses on a specific endpoint, but only if the number of login requests is not high.

The reasoning is that during a spike in login attempts, an increase in 404s can be expected (e.g., due to invalid users), so we don’t want an alert in that case. However, when login traffic is normal, a high number of 404s could indicate a real issue.

Currently, it seems Instana doesn’t support “Alert on X unless Y is also high” logic or any way to correlate metrics within a single alert rule.

It would be very useful to introduce support for conditional expressions or correlation-based alerting between metrics or events. This would enable more intelligent, context-aware alerting and help reduce false positives in scenarios like the one described.

While such conditional multi-metric alerts are being worked on for Infrastructure Smart Alerts, it is currently not planned to be added to Application Smart Alerts in the next 12 month timeframe.
Meanwhile we are planning however to allow more refined configurations for Incidents, which will likely cover the scenarios described and only a single incident would be created based on multiple of these conditions.
