Support Multiple SAML Certificates for Seamless Certificate Rotation

Currently, when rotating SAML certificates (typically done annually for security compliance), our organization experiences service downtime. This occurs due to the time lag between:

  1. Activating a new certificate on our Identity Provider (IdP)

  2. Asking support to update the certificate configuration on Instana SaaS

The manual coordination required between teams (security/IT and Instana support) creates a window where SAML authentication fails, blocking user access to critical business functions and, not least, violates our SLA requirements for continuous availability.

Proposal

Allow the configuration of:

  • A primary certificate (active)

  • One or more secondary certificates (as fallbacks)

    While the UI only supports deleting the config and re-configuring with the new cert, if this 2-3 minute window where new user logins might fail cannot be risked, we do have an update API for IdP configs, where the new cert can be added without a gap.
