Need Air-gapped support for the k8s IDOT - Self-Hosted Custom Edition

Since October 2025, the FIS(Fidelity Information Services) customer has been working to enable distributed tracing using OpenTelemetry (OTel) integration to achieve end‑to‑end traceability across Istio, Envoy Proxy, HAProxy and related components. This capability is a critical requirement for their observability strategy.

During these enablement efforts, the FIS customer encountered multiple technical issues and opened IBM Support Case #TS020626827. Over the following months, several IBM teams including IBM Support, the Instana Product Group, and SWAT Engineering engaged extensively to troubleshoot and assist. Despite significant collaboration and effort, the issues remained unresolved.

After multiple troubleshooting sessions and live demonstrations, IBM teams concluded that the FIS customer’s scenario involved complexities beyond the scope of standard IBM Support. As a result, IBM recommended deploying IDOT to provide dedicated, specialized support for their implementation challenges.

However, the FIS customer operates in a strictly air‑gapped environment, and based on recent experiences with another enterprise customer, IBM Support proactively validated the feasibility of an air‑gapped IDOT deployment. The Instana Product team confirmed that IDOT is not supported for air‑gapped Kubernetes installations. This limitation directly prevents the FIS customer from moving forward with the proposed resolution path.

The FIS customer has been attempting to enable this feature for over five months, and the repeated cycles of troubleshooting without resolution have created significant frustration and erosion of confidence. The inability to implement distributed tracing is now:

  • Blocking their adoption of Instana as their primary observability platform

  • Delaying critical deployment timelines

  • Preventing integration with their existing tool chains and operational processes

  • The FIS customer also actively uses Dynatrace, and the continued inability to deliver the required Instana capabilities creates a real risk that they may discontinue Instana entirely and consolidate their observability strategy on Dynatrace.

The FIS customer views distributed tracing as a foundational capability, not an optional enhancement. Failure to provide a path forward places the relationship and the broader adoption of Instana at material risk
