Documentation for the new Gateway API feature of Custom Edition on AKS, replacing NGINX.

The Kubernetes community has officially announced the retirement of the Ingress NGINX project, which directly impacts long-term platform stability and security.

According to the Kubernetes announcement, Ingress NGINX will only receive best-effort maintenance until March 2026. After that date, the project will stop receiving updates, including bug fixes, security patches, or new releases.

Due to the announced retirement of the NGINX Ingress Controller and the Kubernetes community’s recommendation to adopt the Gateway API, it is important to ensure that our platform documentation reflects the current and supported approach for managing ingress traffic in AKS.

In this context, it is recommended that the documentation be updated to include the required steps and configuration guidelines for implementing Application Gateway for Containers in AKS, along with the related Gateway API resources.

Updating the documentation would provide the following benefits:

  • Ensure alignment with the modern Kubernetes networking model based on Gateway API.
  • Provide clear guidance for teams implementing ingress in AKS environments.
  • Reduce implementation inconsistencies across projects.

Including these instructions will help ensure a consistent and supported ingress implementation aligned with the future direction of the Kubernetes ecosystem.
