Expand & Clarify Documentation for Parentheses and Boolean Logic in Application Perspective Filters

Teams rely on complex AND/OR/NOT combinations and parentheses in Application Perspective filters to precisely scope services, endpoints, namespaces, and infrastructure. Today, there is no authoritative, detailed documentation on:

  • How parentheses are parsed (operator precedence, associativity)
  • Supported operators (AND/OR/NOT), valid syntax, and limitations
  • What is allowed vs. rejected, with actionable validation messages
  • Edge cases (nested groups, negation with groups, mixing text/regex/wildcards)

As a result, users encounter seemingly logical expressions that the UI rejects without guidance, leading to inconsistent filters, trial‑and‑error, and governance risk at scale.

    Hello @Guest & @Guest

We had planned this more as a future consideration and not something to work on right away. However, based on the follow-up discussions, I’m assuming this might be having a larger impact than we initially expected.

I think it would be good for us to have a call and discuss this further. I will schedule an invite for the same

    Regards

    Smitha

The extra parenthesis that cause this error are not being manually added by end users but automatically added by Instana each time the configuration is saved.

Customer requests, at minimum, the UI should error catch and display a message. There is a message in the browser console but not directly from the UI, makes it less apparent to what the input issue was.
