Requirement to collect custom WMI data

Suggestion is to create a WMI receiver for the OTEL IDOT collector.  WMI is prevelent in all Microsoft environments and applications/middleware write key performance metrics into WMI classes.  By providing a WMI receiver, customers could integrate any WMI class into Instana.   

This would provide broader portfolio coverage and could elminate the need to enhance some of our existing sensors such as the Host sensor, Active Directory, or SQL Server.

    Thanks a lot for the detailed suggestion and for outlining the WMI use cases so clearly.

    Support for collecting custom WMI data through a dedicated WMI receiver on the OTEL IDOT collector is not available today, but this is a valuable idea and aligns well with how many Microsoft‑centric environments expose key performance metrics. We see how a generic WMI receiver could let you bring arbitrary WMI classes into Instana and, over time, reduce the need to extend individual sensors (for example, Host, Active Directory, SQL Server) just to cover new WMI‑based KPIs.

    We’ve captured this as a feature request and will consider it as we evolve our Windows and OTEL‑based integrations. While there is no committed timeline yet, we agree this would help broaden portfolio coverage and give you more flexibility in integrating metrics that are currently only available via WMI.

    In the meantime, if you’re able to share a short list of the specific WMI classes and properties that are most important for your environment, that would help us better understand and prioritize the initial scope for this capability. What are the top 3–5 WMI classes you’d want to bring into Instana first?
