Support for Custom Alert Channels in Instana

Today, to integrate Instana with other tools we rely on webhooks. However, the target tools are often not expecting the Instana payload format, which forces teams to develop custom adapters to transform the data before it can be consumed.

In our case, we already maintain a custom adapter to integrate Instana alerts with an SMS notification system, and we will need to develop another adapter to automatically open incidents in our ITSM tool. This approach increases development effort, operational complexity, and long-term maintenance costs.

The idea is for Instana to provide a native way to build custom alert channels directly within the platform, allowing users to define payload structure, authentication, and delivery logic according to their integration needs. This would eliminate the need for external adapters and make integrations more flexible and faster to implement.

There are monitoring tools in the market that already offer the capability to build custom alert channels, and even other IBM products provide similar extensibility models. Bringing this capability into Instana would improve integration flexibility and reduce customer development effort.
