High Availability for the Cloud Service Agent

Currently the cloud service agent is a single point of failure. This idea is to advocate IBM looking to incorporate high availability throughout the full observability collection and monitoring stack. For instance, critical managed services may be being monitored by instana where the data collection via a cloud service agent is a single point of failure. A failure in the collection of monitored data may result in an alert for a managed service not firing in instana, resulting in an excessive cost to the business.

We have suggested this solution but the customer informed that the security will not allow IAM roles to the k8 cluster notes to monitor. They want to limit the access to specific systems so they want to tie the IAM roles to specific systems.

Hi Andrew, thanks a lot for taking the time and providing this input.

We have a feature, where a cloud service agent can be deployed into Kubernetes or OpenShift and the container orchestrator will handle the case where an agent needs to be re-started. This is called "Remote Agent Deployment". You will find all the information in the documentation here: https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/instana-observability?topic=kubernetes-installing-remote-agent

Feel free to re-open this idea or create a new idea if this feature does not help with your case.

    Best regards,

Henning Treu - Product Manager Instana Agent
