Enable Instana AI Features with Customer‑Managed LLMs

Currently, Instana already provides valuable capabilities such as incident summarization, which are extremely useful for daily operations and troubleshooting. However, the integration with large language models is tightly coupled to IBM Watson, and while alternative LLMs can theoretically be used through Watson Orchestrator, this component is not available in all enterprise environments. As a result, teams that already use and are standardized on other LLM providers cannot easily leverage their existing AI investments within Instana.

The idea is to enable Instana AI agents and features, such as incident summarization and analysis, to integrate directly with customer-managed or customer-approved LLMs, rather than being restricted to Watson-based integrations. In our case, the organization uses OpenAI models hosted on Azure, which are already approved, secured, and widely adopted internally. Allowing Instana to connect to such LLM endpoints through a generic, configurable interface would remove unnecessary dependencies and lower the barrier to adoption of AI-driven features.

This approach would significantly increase the practical usability of AI capabilities in Instana and accelerate our adoption.
