This is an IBM Automation portal for Cloud Management, Technology Cost Management, Network Automation and AIOps products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Allow Customization or Duplication of Built-in Events in Instana

We are currently experiencing a high number of false positives generated by Instana’s built-in events, which leads us to completely disregard them and instead rely on custom events or smart alerts. The main limitation is that built-in events cannot be edited, tuned, or duplicated with different thresholds, which makes it difficult to adapt them to real operational needs.

This situation reduces the practical value of built-in events, as they cannot be adjusted to match the specific behavior and tolerance levels of different environments. As a result, teams are forced to recreate similar logic using custom configurations, increasing complexity and operational overhead.

The proposed improvement is to make built-in events customizable or at least allow them to be duplicated and modified, including threshold adjustments. This would allow us to retain the built-in logic provided by Instana while adapting it to our context, improving signal quality, reducing noise, and increasing overall efficiency in incident detection and response.

Built-in events are often based on highly custom sensors coda and thus do not allow customization. This is why custom events were introduced and are now superseded by Smart Alerts, which allow a wide range of customization.
As not all of the built-in configurations can be replicated with Smart Alerts, the only option on these remains to disable the built-in event rule.

We're planning to offer the built-in events where a simple metric-threshold pair can be used as an out of the box Smart Alert, instead of the non-configurable built-in event option in the future.
