To avoid unnecessary events close and open during Instana agent restart

When I'm testing Instana agent restart OR stop/start, I've found lots of unnecessary event closed and opened.

Before Instana agent restarted/stopped, there are lots of opened/outstanding events associated with that servers. After I stopped/restarted the agent, all opened/outstanding events will close automatically even though event condition still hold. i.e. event should keep open. After the agent startup again, instana will re-trigger all outstanding events that previously closed

In short, Instana should keep OPEN ones that were OPEN before agent STOP/RESTART then do a check when it START to see if the EVENT is still same. This will affect the MTTR reporting

I don't agree with Instana support's suggestion by increasing the grace period to reduce false positives. Currently, we've configured the grace period of all custom events to 60 seconds. If we increase the grace period solely to avoid false positives, it will affect / prolong the real event auto-closure. To me, this is not a good solution to address the problem.

In absence of metric data, I'd rather suggest engineering team considering to reuse the previous metric data up until metric data available again (i.e. Instana agent come back up)

Similar technique has been used / adopted in resolving case TS021730445. Please consider

As discussed during our call, HSBC will test using maintenance windows created using the restart script to suppress alert notifications.
Explained that in lieu of metric information open issues will close after a timeout, as Instana cannot be sure that the agent is not decommissioned and can't keep the issue open indefinitely. Similarly when the agent comes back online and the metric sent is violating the threshold and new issue will be opened.

If the maintenance window is configured correctly, both CLOSE and OPEN notifications will be suppressed.

    Hi Marco,

thanks for posting this idea. I have a few additional questions:

    • Please provide concrete examples of events, which will be closed after the agent shuts down.

    • how long will the agent be down?

    • Should open events be kept open if an agent goes down, what would the timeout be?

    • A host can go down indefinitely and never come back (decommissioned host), what about attached events?

    Thanks and best regards,
