Instana Distribution of OpenTelemetry (IDOT) Support for SQL Server and IIS Receivers

Customers adopting the Instana Distribution of OpenTelemetry Collector (IDOT) are encountering gaps in receiver coverage, specifically the absence of support for SQL Server (sqlserverreceiver) and IIS (iisreceiver) receivers that are available in the upstream OpenTelemetry Collector contrib repository.

These receivers are critical for customers operating in Windows-centric environments and relying on Microsoft workloads as part of their core infrastructure. Today, IDOT includes a curated subset of upstream components focused on stability and security, but this results in missing coverage for key enterprise use cases.

This feature request is to evaluate, validate, and include support for:

  • sqlserverreceiver (or equivalent supported approach for SQL Server telemetry)
  • iisreceiver (or equivalent supported approach for IIS metrics/logs)

This would ideally include:

  • Security validation and CVE vetting aligned with IDOT standards
  • Full supportability within IBM/Instana guidance
  • Documentation and configuration guidance for production use

Providing these receivers within IDOT would enable customers to standardize on a single, IBM-supported collector instead of maintaining hybrid or unsupported upstream collector deployments.

    Great idea!  In fact, this is a requirement from one of my Instana customers that have said they may look at other options if not addressed.  Please consider prioritizing.  Thank you
