Support for running Instana agent as non privileged user on Kubernettes

There are the following restrictions on Kubernettes for running the Instana agent:


  • Deployment with an operator or Helm chart, but with the following restrictions:

    • Pods with: hostNetwork: true, hostPID: true, privileged: true, hostPath mounts not permitted

    • Images with critical and high vulnerabilities found while scanning a new image not permitted

    • Strong preference (and possibly a requirement) for changing ClusterRole to Role as there are greater restrictions for ClusterRole which may not be allowed.

    • Rules with secrets are not permitted for ClusterRole.

    Hi Gordon,

    in the scope of this idea, we will support the following setup:

    • Run Instana agent with non-root and without the privileged: true setting

    • Adjust the ClusterRole rules to not include permissions for secrets

    • Review all ClusterRoles for the Operator and restrict or change to a namespace Role wherever possible

    Our agent images get scanned for CVEs during assembly for every build.
