Support Tracing of Kong API Gateway

Instana currently does not support Kong Tracing. On our platform, the Kong API- gateway is a very central and important component. Hence, we'd like to see spans of Kong in our distributed traces.

    Hi there,

We now finally managed to instrument on our own by manipulating the kong docker image and adding the nginx directives in the template files just before "kong prepare" is executed. Works without any problems on our dev cluster so far. This previously was not possible, because the base image, which we have to use, was alpine-based and the compiled Instana- OpenResty sensor was not compatible. With the change to an Ubuntu-based image, the Instana sensor can be loaded successfully.

Maybe you can add a guide somewhere on how to the that, so others might profit from that workaround.

    Kind regards,

    Tobi

    Hi there,

Are there any updates regarding this issue?

We have already integrated kong with the opentelemetry serverless acceptor. However, the correlation of the traces does not 100% work as kong is also forwarding X-INSTANA- Headers and the Instana Sensors are preferring to correlate Spans with the Instana- Trace Id and not using the Trace ID from the W3C. This leads to wrong correlations.

We also already tried to setup the instrumentation could work by using the openresty tracing sensor; however, Instana currently only provide a glibc-based module and we are currently forced to use an image, which is using musl.

An official workaround documentation/ blogpost would be already very helpful :) We are also eager to test any beta approaches here :)
