Cloud Management and AIOps

This is an IBM Automation portal for Cloud Management, Technology Cost Management, Network Automation and AIOps products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Log4Net & SeriLog missing tags

Instana's log monitoring supports several very useful default tags, some of these tags are sadly not filled in for the popular .NET (Framework) logging frameworks, see below. Please fill these tags such that we can actually use the log monitoring, without these tags it is almost impossible to use (we currently have to search for the exception in the log files of our applications).

Exception Message this tag is needed because now only the log message is present for Log4Net and often the useful info is present in the message of the exception that was attached to the log message. A log statement contains a messageTemplate and an exception, for example https://github.com/serilog/serilog/blob/dev/src/Serilog/ILogger.cs#L233.

Exception Type this tag is needed to distinguise expected exceptions (input validation etc, are caused by input given by an end-user) and not-expected exceptions (bugs, broken background jobs etc).

Exception StackTrace this tag is needed to find where in the code the problem occurred. And also very important to get the inner-exception (an exception is sometimes wrapped by another exception to add more info) because the most useful info is sometimes hidden there.

Log4Net

  1. Exception Message tag is missing

  2. Exception Type tag is missing

  3. Exception StackTrace tag is missing

Serilog

  1. Exception StackTrace tag is missing (the other two are present)
