Cross platform disaster recovery support

Currently there is limitation of cross platform CP4AIOPS backup/restore, based on our email conversation with Neil Boyette (IBM)

"In our current release for DR, we support Backup & Restore.

When you use OCP then for Backup/Restore you can use Fusion which provides an online backup. This means that you can take a backup without impacting the running instance (aka you do not need a maintenance window). This should work regardless of where you run OCP, whether on-prem, or on a cloud self hosted, or on a cloud in a managed environment. As such, this provides a great and flexible option.

Note that backups are typically tied to a given deployment. As such, we don’t support taking a backup on i.e. self managed OCP, and then apply / restore that backup to an OCP instance on cloud. Reason for this is that the storage, networking etc that Ian alluded to are typically different. You can of course apply the backup to a different cluster that is hosted the same way.  In short, the goal of this backup is to provide the same setup/snapshot that you had when you took the backup on either the same or a different cluster.

Now, when you deploy on GKE directly, then Fusion isn’t supported. I believe here Telus had their own preferred backup solution. We can provide the recipe used for Fusion so you can adapt it to your backup product.

Longer term, we are working on a Geo-R / Hot Standby option. In that case you can have 2 cluster and have the data replica between them. That way, you can switch over to the standby cluster for DR. These should even work across environments (i.e. Linux to OCP, or GKE to OCP).

Thanks,

Neil"

The desired behavior is CP4AIOPS backup/restore is platform independent, so we can implement solution like Prod = on-prem OCP on bare metal, DR = OCP on GCP or GKE on GCP.  To be able to run a different platform on DR gives flexibility for building DR site on Cloud to reduce operation cost.
