Automatic CVE Resolution via CPE in SBOMs

See this idea on ideas.ibm.com

Why is it useful?
SBOMs often include CPEs, which are globally recognized identifiers for software components. Leveraging these identifiers enables IBM Concert to automatically discover associated CVEs using public databases, delivering immediate security insights without requiring manual CVE input or matching.Who would benefit from it?

  • Security analysts who want real-time vulnerability visibility.
  • DevSecOps teams aiming to shift left by catching issues early.
  • Any customer using CycloneDX or SPDX-based SBOMs with embedded CPEs.

How should it work?

  • During SBOM ingestion, parse any included CPE identifiers.
  • Query public vulnerability databases (e.g., NIST NVD API) using these CPEs.
  • Automatically populate relevant CVEs in the asset’s vulnerability view.
  • Ensure the system handles version-specific and generic CPEs gracefully to avoid false positives or missing CVEs.
