Extending Sustainability Metrics in IBM Turbonomic for Kubernetes and Workload Controllers

Idea:
Currently, IBM Turbonomic provides comprehensive sustainability information for virtual machines, including energy and carbon footprint data, as well as the impact of optimization actions on these metrics. However, to fully achieve our sustainability goals, we also need similar information for Kubernetes environments and workload controllers, as these are among the core platforms in our IT infrastructure.

Proposal:
Enhance IBM Turbonomic with the capability to collect, analyze, and optimize sustainability metrics (e.g., energy consumption, carbon emissions) for Kubernetes workloads and their underlying workload controllers. This would enable:

  1. Transparent visibility into the energy consumption and carbon emissions of Kubernetes workloads.
  2. Identification of optimization actions to reduce resource usage, energy consumption, and emissions.
  3. Support for sustainability goals related to containerized workloads, improving the overall environmental footprint of the IT infrastructure.

Benefits:

  • Comprehensive coverage of sustainability metrics across all platforms, including virtual machines and containerized workloads.
  • Improved decision-making for sustainable IT operations strategies.
  • Helping organizations achieve their sustainability goals and comply with environmental regulations.
