Snapshots Optimization - Detect orphaned snapshots not actively tied to production workloads

Problem Statement:

Cloud environments often accumulate orphaned or long‑running snapshots that exceed their intended retention periods. These snapshots are frequently forgotten, unmanaged, and continue to incur storage costs. Today, detecting and managing such snapshots typically requires manual scripts or external tooling, which does not scale and introduces operational risk.

Proposed Enhancement:

Introduce a native Turbonomic policy that automatically detects cloud snapshots exceeding a configurable lifetime threshold and flags them for optimization actions.

Key capabilities to include:

Identify snapshots that exceed a user‑defined retention period (e.g., 30, 45, 60 days)

Detect orphaned snapshots not actively tied to production workloads

Support automated or recommended actions based on policy configuration

Current Customer Journey:
We are currently doing this sort of monitoring on a periodic basis via a script in our GCP environment and are now needing to make an investment in code development to do the same in our AWS and Azure environments. Detection and removal of orphaned snapshots in our GCP environment alone has resulted in over $50k/month of recuring benefit for a total of nearly $300k savings over the last 6 months.

It would be incredibly valuable for Turbonomic to be able to deliver these savings to other customers and in all the supported Cloud environments.
