Include All ROSA Licensing & Service Fees in Cloudability Container Cost Allocation Data

Title:
Include All ROSA Licensing & Service Fees in Cloudability Container Cost Allocation Data

Description:
Request to incorporate Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS (ROSA) licensing and service fees into Container Cost Allocation data within Cloudability. Specifically, include the two AWS Marketplace line items: Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS with Hosted Control Planes (HCP) and Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management (ACM) for Kubernetes. This enhancement will enable accurate, end-to-end cost visibility for ROSA clusters and support better financial decision-making.

Details:
Currently, Cloudability does not account for all ROSA-associated costs, particularly the licensing and service fees charged via AWS Marketplace. These fees are critical to understanding the total cost of ownership for ROSA clusters and applications.

Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS with Hosted Control Planes (HCP):
This service includes two primary charges:

  1. Service Fees for Worker Nodes: Billed on demand at an hourly rate of $0.171 per 4 vCPUs consumed by worker nodes.
  2. Cluster Management Fee: A fixed $0.25 per hour cluster fee for clusters using hosted control planes.
These charges reflect the operational and management cost of running ROSA clusters with managed control planes, which significantly impact cluster expenses.

Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management (ACM) for Kubernetes:
ACM licensing is based on vCPU usage, measured in acm_vcpu_hours. This solution provides centralized governance and management for multiple Kubernetes clusters, including ROSA clusters, and thus its fees should be included in total cluster costs. More details can be found here: https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/pp/prodview-s2nb6rqz2i3ru

Pricing Considerations:
We request the ability to configure private pricing agreements for these line items within Cloudability, as many enterprises negotiate prepaid vCPU hours and custom overage rates for hosted control planes and ACM. If private pricing configuration is not feasible, the system should at least default to sticker (list) prices, allowing customers to approximate their costs accurately.

Reference:
Comprehensive ROSA pricing information is available here: https://aws.amazon.com/rosa/pricing/

Impact:
Incorporating these ROSA licensing and service fees into cost allocation data will provide our company with a complete and accurate view of ROSA-related expenses. This visibility is essential to:

  • Understand the true “out-the-door” cost of ROSA clusters.
  • Make informed decisions about application architecture and potential re-architecture towards cloud-native designs.
  • Assess financial impacts and optimize container usage accordingly.

Enhance showback reporting accuracy for containerized workloads.

Overall, this feature will improve financial transparency and cost management for ROSA deployments, enabling better strategic planning and operational efficiency.
