Enhance IBM i (AS/400) dashboard capabilities for Active Subsystems, Jobs, History Log, and Journal Details.

We have a banking customer running critical workloads on IBM i (AS/400). Instana already collects the required IBM i metrics and supports Events/Alerts, however we are currently blocked from delivering custom dashboard capabilities for IBM i oriented to operational and administration teams.

Today, IBM i monitoring in Instana is largely limited to built-in views and to show Events/Incidents in a custom dashboard. This is not sufficient for the customer’s day-to-day needs: they require a custom dashboard that can list and visualize IBM i metrics by Active Subsystems, Jobs, History Log, and Journal details, to understand what is happening right now and validate current usage, without having to wait for an alert to trigger.

At the moment, Instana does not provide a native capability to present these IBM i dimensions in a custom dashboard (list/table style) in the same way customers expect for operational monitoring. As a result, visibility of real-time IBM i activity is limited, and the only actionable view available in dashboards is through Events/Incidents, which does not replace continuous operational oversight. This gap is a blocker for scalable operations in regulated environments where dashboards must be consistent, maintainable, and management-ready.

We appreciate that this proposal has been considered as a “Future consideration,” and we are pleased to know that it has been taken into account as part of the future evolution of Instana.

This functionality is particularly important for our customers running IBM i (AS/400) critical workloads, as they currently require greater operational visibility and real-time analysis capabilities.

Although Instana already collects the required IBM i metrics and supports events and alerts, the operations team’s needs go beyond alerting. They require a custom operational dashboard that provides continuous visibility, without having to wait for an alert to be triggered, including:

    Active subsystems.

    Jobs and their activity.

    History log.

    Journal details.

Relevant IBM i operational metrics and status.

Ideally, this information should be available through configurable lists or tables within a custom dashboard, allowing operations teams to quickly understand what is happening in the system and validate its current behavior.

We believe this capability would provide significant value, particularly in banking and regulated environments where continuous operational monitoring and consistent, easy-to-maintain dashboards are important for daily operations and management.

We are pleased that this proposal has been considered for “Future consideration.” However, we would greatly appreciate it if you could provide, even approximately, an estimated timeframe or target period in which this functionality could be evaluated or considered for implementation.

This requirement is important to our customers, and having some guidance regarding the next steps or potential roadmap timeframe would be very helpful.

    Thank you
