Oracle service names are the identifiers used by processes connecting to the database. A service name is independently configured from the database name. Knowing the available service names for the database allows users to search by an identifier know to the user. This data will also be useful for linking databases to consuming applications via the service name configured on the database and service name configured within the application.

A database can have more than one service name defined.
