Multi factor Authentication

"Background:
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) enhances the security of an application by providing an added layer(s) of authentication mechanism. The authentication mechanism can be any of the following types: what the user knows (security question), what the user has (security token), what the user is (biometric verification).

Issue:
During the assessment it was observed that there is no 2 Factor Authentication enabled while logging in to the application. An user can just access the application by entering the account's Username and Password credentials."

Risk:

In the event of leaked credentials of legitimate users, potential attackers may use them to authenticate themselves into the application. Without 2FA enabled, it will be easy for the attacker to login to the application with just the username and password.

Recommendation:

"It is recommended to enable MFA for all user login, which can be OTP based or authenticator based, which is collected at the time of user registration, or a set of security questions that only the user has knowledge of."
