Allow for more than 15 columns in GROUPBY and allow admin to select limit and/or prompt users that additional time will be needed to group data

See this idea on ideas.ibm.com

Background: We have a lot of fields in mapping files. In some cases, 20+ columns from a single field. We also have data and reports available at a very granular level. In one case, we have a table that is 3.5m rows per month with almost 100 mapped column and all of these are visible in a report through column pickers.

Issue: In a lot of cases, users require more 15 columns in their views. However, once the threshold of 15 is reached, Apptio no longer groups the rows and the resulting table is much larger than it needs to be. This can be frustrating as the additional columns selected would not add any rows as they are one-to-one mapped with a column already visible.

Potential solutions: It would be great if:

  • more than 15 columns were allowed to be selected for the GROUPBY to work - Apptio should be able to work out whether additional fields selected would result in additional rows or not and so selecting certain columns should not interrupt the GROUPBY
  • allow admin to be able to set the GROUPBY limit per table as we understand our data and use cases and can set expectations with our users
  • users could be prompted where limits were exceeded and give them the option - allow the GROUPBY to work and wait longer, or disallow the GROUPBY and show all rows quicker
