Instana Metrics Sensor for Solace Message Broker on Docker

We have more than 30 Teams using the Message Broker Technology - Solace. Some of them are central data providers, which makes this Technology a critical component in the overall the company Service & technology landscape.

Operating and Monitoring all Solace Brokers are therefore very important and done by a central team (Solace Service Team). The Solace Service Team is making heavy use of Prometheus (Thanos) and Grafana to provide Monitoring Services for themselves and the DevOps Teams using the Broker.
But Operating and Managing these Monitoring Components produces overhead and produces additional Monitoring solutions, which do not pay into the company overall Monitoring Strategy with Instana.

Use-Cases:

- New Solace Brokers provisioned on Openshift / Kubernetes should be Monitored automatically with build-in Alerts, so that a DevOps team will be alerted by Instana when Issues happen on a Solace Broker.

- A Solace Service Team can Monitor all Solace Brokers via Instana to get an overall picture of the used versions/patch levels, consuming teams, and for detection of broker issues (not enough memory, high CPU, producer/consumer issues, other issues)

- Migration from Thanos to Insana-based Monitoring Solution to safe Monitoring Operations platform costs/effort for Solace Broker.

Problem:
----------
Currently, Instana is not providing support for the Solace Broker Technology and has no built-in Dashboards / Alerts.
Therefore the Solace Service Team has developed a Prometheus Opensource Exporter (see:
https://github.com/solacecommunity/solace-prometheus-exporter)
to get all Metrics into Prometheus with more than 170k Metrics.
Adding these Metrics directly into Instana would cause a Metric Explosion since Instana is not supporting multi-dimensional metrics. This causes a lot of manual effort in creating Dashboards and Alerts for each single Solace Broker / Team.

Desired Solution:

Our desired Solution is an Instana Sensor for Solace on Docker which gets all Metrics from the Broker running on a docker container.
Visualization of these Metrics is available on Build in Dashboards in Instana or Custom infrastructure Dashboards. The standard Messaging / Broker Alerts are available as Built-in Solace Alerts and custom Events can be created based on the existing metrics.
