Instana API: Inclusion of Synthetic Trace Calls in Instana API Query for Analyze Trace

Dear IBM Instana Team,

Our team frequently utilizes the Instana API to retrieve in-depth alarming details by closely scrutinizing trace details. This has significantly aided our performance analysis and error identification efforts. However, we have encountered a challenge that we hope can be addressed.

We rely on synthetic trace calls related to health checks to obtain granular error details, but we've noticed that the current API does not provide a direct way to query these synthetic or health check-related trace calls. This absence is hindering our ability to thoroughly understand and resolve specific issues.

Reviewing the current API documentation available at https://instana.github.io/openapi/#operation/getTraces, we have been unable to find a parameter that could facilitate such a query. We wonder if a parameter, such as 'includeSynthetics', could be integrated into the API for this purpose.

We have observed that similar parameters exist in other APIs, as demonstrated here: https://instana.github.io/openapi/#operation/getServicesMetrics. We believe the inclusion of such a feature in the Instana API would greatly enhance our analysis capabilities and we're hopeful that other users could also benefit from it.

We kindly request you to consider implementing this feature in the upcoming iterations of the Instana API. Your support in this matter would be greatly appreciated and would enable us to continue using Instana as an integral part of our monitoring and error management process.

Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

    Hey Alireza,

    I'm sorry for the confusion, but it seems our API docs are missing some crucial fields for /api/application-monitoring/analyze/traces.

    In fact the top level elements available are:

    { "timeFrame": { }, "tagFilterExpression": { }, "metrics": [ ], "order": { }, "group": {}, "includeInternal": false, "includeSynthetic": true }

    This is also the output of the "API Query" button you would find in the Instana Analyse UI.

    We will update the API docs accordingly for the next release. I hope this solves it for you.

    2nd attempt to explain the matter and future plans:

    The /api/application-monitoring/analyze/traces operation actually does not support synthetic calls, yet. I will have this added in one of the following release, stay tuned for an update.

    The UI button for "Analyse Traces" is showing the wrong API operation and should in fact point to /api/application-monitoring/analyze/trace-groups, which has all the filter parameters available.

    Best
