Allowing SNMP Trap Alerts to be related to the actual device

In many cases SNMP Trap based are sent by a single SNMP Trap Forwarder.  The Genesys Call Center software, NICE Recording Software, and vmWare vCenter are classic examples of this.  From a recurring failure point of view, it gives the impression that this device is constantly failing.   What I would like to see is an ability for SevOne to look at a field, to match for a hostname that exists in SevOne, and then create the alarm against that device, instead of the source device.

Thanks for submitting this idea, Marcus. I understand the value this would add if SevOne could support trap event correlation for devices that send their traps through a trap forwarder.

In order for us to accurately estimate the level of effort to potentially implement this feature, we need to know more about how traps are being forwarded at Verizon to understand what's necessary to build a marketable solution.

Is this a custom implementation. If not, is there a specific RFC being followed. If you could provide a labeled, sanitized example of a forwarded trap with the varbinds identifying the source device and the trap forwarder, this would help us validate our understanding of the technical problem.

I'm happy to take this discussion offline via email or WebEx if you'd prefer. I look forward to hearing back from you.
