Need to be able to create a custom Event via the Agent API and specify a Host other than the Host of the Agent

Need to be able to create a custom Event via the Agent API and specify a Host other than the Host of the Agent.    A customer is doing remote detection of problems.   They want to be able to open an Event and have the Event indicate that it is affecting a remote host.   Today, the Agent Event API uses the Hostname of the Agent and correlates the Event to the Agent machine.

In this case, the Hostname needs to be the remotely monitored system.

    Dear Customer,

We thank you so much for submitting an idea and, in doing this, we appreciate your support in improving Instana product.

Unfortunately this requirement is not currently in our roadmap and will not be for the next 12/18 months.

If this feature is still a priority for your Instana implementation at that time, please reopen it to bring up to our attention and we will reevaluate for its inclusion.

Currently we do not intend to ingest any data for hosts/entities which are not under Instana monitoring. Looking into OpenTelemetry for the matter might be an option though.

    Thank you & best regards

The agent web service allows events to be injected, but they have the hostname of the agent attached to them.

We have several integrations that involve pulling events or having events pushed to us from external systems that monitor other infrastructure.

Thus, it would be nice to be able to inject an event with the hostname set to something specific. If there is not already a host entry in Instana for this host it should create one (and fill out “unknown” for all the metadata).

We could then fill out the metadata (tags, zone, infra/apm, etc.) using a backend API.

And/Or we could pre-create the host entries with their metadata by scraping a CMDB or other source of host information.
