Instana's engineering team sent out a Linux package update that contained a file that it should not have contained. As a result, the agents that were upgraded with that package that had been set to infrastructure mode, were switched back to APM mode. This caused an outage for us because the agent on the Instana backend server itself started sending in data, seeing those calls that it itself made, instrumenting those calls and sending in trace data, so-on and so-forth until it ran us out of disk space.
This has nothing to do with multi-tenancy.
Basing on the further clarifications provided:
This is not a support ticket. This is a general script that needs to be created by the Instana team. This allows for selective data deletion in the event we push bad code to the customer.
we would like to ask:
When you say “in the event that we push bad code to the customer”, can you explain what you mean?
Do you mean that you are managing multiple customers and you are worried that you will install an Agent at one customer that is intended for the target tenant of another customer?
Please, let us know.
Thanks a lot.
Please, open a case to engage with Support team to help cleaning the data.
I would like to add to this.
A way to discover which hosts are using the most amount of data. This would have helped point out that the instana server agents were the cause of the issue in the first place.
